SUPERIOR, Wis. – UW-Superior junior sprinter/hurdler
Maria Mazo (Hendaye, France/Irungo La Salle) has been named to the Google Cloud Academic All-District Women's Track & Field/Cross Country Team, the College Sports Information Directors of America announced Tuesday.
The award recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the track and in the classroom. The Google Cloud Academic All-America program separately recognizes men's and women's track and field and cross country student-athletes in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.
Mazo, a double major in International Business and Economics with a 3.989 grade-point average, was the Co-UMAC Field Athlete of the Meet for the 2019 indoor championship. She scored 20.5 points for the Yellowjackets in the meet, helping UWS to a second-place finish in the team standings.
She was an all-UMAC honoree in both the long jump and triple jump in the indoor conference meet. She also earned UMAC Female Track Athlete of the Week earlier in the season on Feb. 11.
Mazo set and broke her own 60-meter hurdles school record three times in the 2018-19 indoor season.
In the 2019 UMAC outdoor championships, Mazo won the 100-meter hurdles and was all-conference in the both the long jump and high jump.
Mazo also earned all-UMAC recognition in the 2018 indoor championship in both the high jump and 60-meter hurdles and in outdoor in the high jump and 100-meter hurdles.
To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.30 or higher and be a key contributor to their respective team.
Mazo will now advance to the Academic All-America ballot. Those honors will be announced in June.
The all-district honor is the fourth of the 2018-19 season for the 'Jackets. Emily VerWay (volleyball), Eva Reinertsen (women's basketball) and Braeden Barr (baseball) each claimed the accolades, with Reinertsen also becoming a third-team Academic All-America recipient.
