DULUTH, Minn. – Matthew Boyde (Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka) and Brandon Rolf (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) hit RBI singles to break a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning as the fourth-seeded UW-Superior baseball team eliminated No. 5 Crown, 4-1, in the first game of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference tournament at Wade Stadium Thursday.
With the win, UWS (16-20) advances to play top-seeded tournament-host St. Scholastica at 7 p.m.
Knotted at 1-1 with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning, Cory Albertson (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area) doubled to the gap in right-center field. After a flyout, Boyde took a Sydney Ness pitch down the line in right field, scoring Albertson for the lead. Travis Miller (Whittier, Calif./La Serna) followed with a single to left, and Rolf lined a single to left, plating Boyde.
Auggie Anderson (Mendota Heights, Minn./Henry Sibley) (3-4) struck out nine in his second complete game of the season. He scattered six hits and one walk, throwing 126 pitches, allowing the 'Jackets time to overcome a third-inning Crown run.
The Storm opened the scoring when, with runners on second and third and two out, Bailey Sarto reached on a Bryce Flanagan (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd) error at third base. Derek Albers, who started the inning with a single, scored.
UWS tied the game in the bottom of the fourth as Alex Osness (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West) led off with a double down the left-field line and Albertson singled him home with a shot to left center.
The 'Jackets added an insurance run in the eighth when Rolf singled to score Albertson.
Albertson went 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored and an RBI, leading the way in Superior's 10-hit attack. Rolf chipped in with two singles and two runs driven in.
Ness (4-3) took the loss for Crown, going 5.2 innings. He allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk, while striking out one. Rico Aliva and Eric Newman relieved him.
Matt Sanchez was 2-for-4 for Crown, which finished the season 16-18 overall.
