SHERMAN, Texas – Senior captain
Eric Watson (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Hammarskjold) and sophomore forward
Blake Hanson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) scored 37 seconds apart midway through the first half, and senior goalkeeper Dalton VonKanel made three saves for his sixth career shutout as the UW-Superior men's soccer team cruised to a 4-0 season-opening win over Austin Friday.
Hanson added a second goal off of a rebound in the 63rd minute to extend the lead and freshman
Sam Waylee Jr. (Abidjan, Ivory Coast/Morning Glory International School) put the match away with his first collegiate marker with 10 minutes to play.
Blake Doyea (Ramsey, Minn./Anoka) played the ball on the left from the end line to Watson who put it home to open the scoring in the 28th minute. The goal was the 29th of his career – just eight from tying
Jon Bucklew's school record.
Then, less than a minute later, Hanson intercepted a pass and beat Austin's Juan Rodriguez (four saves) low to double the lead.
Hanson scored his fifth career goal and second of the night when Rodriguez stopped a Doyea shot, but couldn't collect the rebound, making it 3-0.
The Yellowjackets outshot Austin, 17-12, and 8-3 in shots on target, improving to 20-1-1 in their last 22 matches.
UWS (1-0) next plays at the University of Dallas in Irving, Texas, Sunday at 2 p.m.
