WINONA, Minn. – The UW-Superior women's volleyball team earned its first win of the season at the Ground Round Sugar Loaf Classic Saturday, a 3-1 victory over Macalester.
Senior
Brylee Colligan (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) collected a double-double of 13 kills and 15 digs and junior
Cami Sletta (Willmar, Minn./Willmar Senior) added 13 kills of her own, five digs and four block assists. Freshman
Hailey Atwood (Big Lake, Minn./Big Lake) picked up a match-high 23 digs to lead the defensive effort. The Yellowjackets (1-2) won by set scores of 27-25, 25-18, 24-26 and 25-16.
UWS dropped its final match of the tournament to Dubuque later in the day in four sets – 23-25, 25-20, 17-25 and 13-25.
Against Macalester, the Scots had a four-point lead on two occasions in the first set before the 'Jackets came all the way back, tying it at 20-20. Teff helped UWS fight off set point with a kill at 24-23. Then a kill by Colligan and block from
A.J. Runck (Annandale, Minn./Apple Valley) and Teff put the 'Jackets up, 1-0 in the match.
A Colligan ace gave UWS a 14-8 lead in the second set. It grew to a 19-10 edge with a
Hannah Goggleye (Calumet, Minn./Greenway) kill from Teff. The 'Jackets cruised to a two-set advantage, ending it with a swing by Sletta.
Macalester (0-3) denied UWS a straight-set win in the fourth, winning the frame in extra points, but the 'Jackets never trailed in the final set, leading by as many as 10 points twice on the way to the victory.
In all, UWS registered 56 total kills against 31 errors in the match.
Sletta added another 13 kills versus Dubuque while Teff had 18 assists and 16 digs for her first collegiate double-double.
Megan Holz (Savage, Minn./Burnsville) tied for the team lead with 18 assists as well and Atwood contributed a team-high 24 digs.
The 'Jackets are back on the court Tuesday at St. Olaf at 5 p.m.
