St. Olaf Defeats Volleyball in Three Sets

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Three UW-Superior volleyball players had at least five kills and two had eight or more digs, but St. Olaf hit. 328 as a team, topping the Yellowjackets, 3-0, at the Skoglund Center Tuesday.

Cami Sletta (Willmar, Minn./Willmar Senior) tallied eight kills while Cassy Teff (Foley, Minn./Foley) and Brylee Colligan (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) had five apiece. Teff added 12 of her team's 21 assists on the day to go with seven digs.

St. Olaf (4-1) had three players with double-figure kills, led by Lauren Rewers' 13. Emily Jarnigan registered a match-high 21 digs. The Oles limited UWS (1-4) to a .163 attack percentage.

The first set was tight before St. Olaf pulled away late for the victory. After a Colligan kill cut the 'Jackets' deficit to 12-10, St. Olaf used a 12-5 run to open a 24-15 advantage. UWS fought off two set points with kills from Colligan and Teff, but Summer Reid gave the Oles the set with a kill to close it out, 25-17.

UWS scored three consecutive points to tie the second set at 15-15 on a St. Olaf error, Hannah Goggleye (Calumet, Minn./Greenway) and Teff block and a Teff kill.

St. Olaf opened a 20-17 lead with a 4-0 spurt to force a timeout. The 'Jackets got to within 23-21 and 24-22 on St. Olaf service errors but no closer. Morgan Marxer ended the set with a kill for a 25-23 win.

The Oles rallied for nine of the first 11 points on the third set and didn't look back, cruising to a 25-12 victory to take the match.

UWS opens its home slate in the Stinger Classic Sponsored by Subway Friday and Saturday. The 'Jackets welcome St. Scholastica, Finlandia, Nebraska Wesleyan and Crown to Mertz Mortorelli Gym. UWS and CSS square off Friday 5 p.m., followed by a match with Finlandia at 7.
