SUPERIOR, Wis. – Four different Yellowjackets scored goals and
Blake Perry (Anoka, Minn./Anoka) tallied a goal and an assist as the UW-Superior men's soccer team opened its home slate with a 4-1 victory over Hamline at NBC Spartan Sports Complex Friday.
UWS stared the scoring in the 18th minute when Perry, streaking down the left side, found
Blake Doyea (Ramsey, Minn./Anoka) with a low cross. Doyea beat Hamline goalkeeper Malachy Zamacona for the 1-0 lead.
Galen Coy (Amery, Wis./Amery) doubled the lead just before halftime on an assist from
Blake Hanson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior). Coy beat Zamacona high in the 43rd minute.
Eric Watson (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Hammarskjold) scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season in the 69th minute off of a feed from
Gustavo Barbieri (Florianópolis, Brazil/Colégio Tendência) for a 3-0 lead.
Three minutes later, Perry picked up his second goal of the season, assisted by
Felix Blick (Linkoping, Sweden/Katedralskolan).
Hamline spoiled UWS goalkeeper
Dalton VonKaenel's (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) bid for a shutout in the 89th minute when Logan Weller blasted one over the outstretch arms to get on the board.
The 'Jackets outshot Hamline, 18-2, for the game and had five corner kicks to the Pipers' two.
Zamacona stopped three shots for HU, which fell to 2-1-0 with the loss. VonKaenel made one save for Superior, which improved to 4-1-0 on the year.
UWS is back on the pitch next Saturday against St. Norbert. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m., at NBC Spartan Sports Complex.
