ST. PETER, Minn. – Raphael Cattelin recorded a goal and two assists and Cole Schwartz scored two goals as Gustavus Adolphus topped the UW-Superior men's soccer team, 5-1, at Gustie Soccer Field Wednesday.
The match pitted the region's Nos. 3 and 7 teams, according to the latest United Soccer Coaches rankings. With the win, Gustavus improves to 7-1-0, while UWS falls to 4-2-2 overall.
Gustavus got on the scoreboard first in the seventh minute when Schwartz put away the rebound of a Cattelin shot for a 1-0 lead.
Eric Watson (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Hammarskjold) tied it for UWS in the 13th minute. Watson headed
Blake Hanson's (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) service home past Gusties' goalkeeper Wesley Sanders for his team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Gustavus retook the lead as
Dalton VonKaenel (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) was caught off of his line in the 26 minute. Cattelin took a through ball, dribbled around the UWS goalie and slipped the ball in for a 2-1 lead. Palden Choesang assisted on the goal.
Cattelin, who figured into the scoring of all three GAC goals in the first half, wasn't done. He was hit a ball that glanced off of Scott Heinen in the 35th minute to extend the lead to 3-1 before the break.
Just 35 seconds into the second half, a free kick from Michael Gibbons found the top left corner, beating
Ulrik Lager (Vollen, Norway/Asker VGS), who relieved VonKaenel.
Gustavus closed the scoring as Schwartz volleyed in a Nolan Garvin feed in the 78th minute.
The Gusties outshot UWS, 19-9, and 9-6 in shots on target. VonKaenel made three saves and Lager had one for the Yellowjackets. Sanders stopped five shots, earning the victory in the nets for Gustavus.
The 'Jackets are back in action Sunday as they open Upper Midwest Athletic Conference action host Northland at 2 p.m.
