SUPERIOR, Wis. – Sophomore
Annah Schussman (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) scored twice, including the game-winning goal with just 15 seconds remaining in the second extra-time period, to lift the UW-Superior women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Northland at NBC Spartan Sports Complex Sunday.
As time was winding down, senior Kaylee Johnson got a step on her defender on flank and found Schussman, who took one stride and fired a left-footed shot past Northland goalkeeper Megan Jordan for the win.
The goal ended a stretch of more than 70 minutes of scoreless play after UWS tied the match, 1-1, on Schussman's first tally of the day in the 37th minute. On that play, She took a feed from
Ivy Grochowski (Duluth, Minn./Denfield) and deposited the ball into the lower left of the net.
Northland opened the scoring with its first goal of the season in the 12th minute as UWS goalie
Madison Gutekunst (Mound, Minn./Mound Westonka) was caught off her line. Ashley Hammes chipped the ball over Gutekunst for the goal. Kayla McPeek assisted on the play.
With the win, the Yellowjackets improved to 2-5-2 on the season and 1-0-0 in the UMAC. It marked the first time since 2015 UWS opened its conference schedule with a victory. The loss dropped the LumberJills to 0-7-0 overall on the season.
Gutekunst earned the win in the UWS nets, making 13 saves. Jordan took the loss with 14 saves. UWS outshot Northland, 26-20, and 16-14 in shots on goal. Schussman took a team-high seven shots with four on target.
Hailey Miller (Hayward, Wis./Hayward) fired six shots, all saved by Jordan.
The 'Jackets return to action Tuesday, hosting UW-Stout at 7 p.m.
