MINNEAPOLIS – Augsburg scored two goals in an 11-minute span in the second half and a late rally from the UW-Superior men's soccer team came up short in a 2-1 defeat at Edor Nelson Field Saturday.
After a tight first half, Augsburg opened the scoring in the 55th minute on a goal from Lionel Vang. UWS goalkeeper
Dalton VonKaenel (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) stopped Vang's initial shot, but Vang corralled the rebound and put it home for a 1-0 lead.
Two minutes later, an
Eric Watson (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Hammarskjold) shot was saved by Augsburg goalie Garrett Kaelin, leading to a Yellowjackets corner kick.
Kaelin made a second save on Watson in the 60th minute and turned away an attempt by
A.J. Olson (Channhassen, Minn./Channhassen) in the 61st.
Daniel Hedstrom doubled the Auggies' advantage five minutes later with an assist from Vang.
Then, in the 72nd minute, on an attempted clear to relieve UWS offensive pressure, Hedstrom was called for a hand ball in the box, giving Superior a penalty kick. Watson stepped up and sent Kaelin the wrong way, cutting the lead to 2-1.
That was as close as the 'Jackets got. They were unable to pull even, dropping their first regular-season match since a Sept. 2, 2018 loss to Luther, 2-0.
Augsburg improves to 2-0-1 with the victory and UWS falls to 3-1-0.
VonKaenel made two saves on the night, while Kaelin stopped three.
Superior is back in action Wednesday at Bethel at 4 p.m.
