MILWAUKEE – Sophomore
Annah Schussman (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) scored two goals and added an assist to give the UW-Superior women's soccer team its first win of the season, 4-1, over Alverno Sunday.
The five points for Schussman are a career high, while the two goals match equal a career best. She scored a pair against Crown in a 3-2 victory Oct. 6 last season.
The Yellowjackets opened the scoring in the in the 10th minute on a goal for
Claire Smith (Hayward, Wis./Hayward). Her third career goal was assisted by
Ivy Grochowski (Duluth, Minn./Denfield).
Alverno tied the match with a penalty kick by Shaye Wolfe five minutes later. The Yellowjackets had had a spot kick of their own in 31st minute, but
Emma Street's (Oak Grove, Minn./St. Francis) attempt was stopped by Alverno goalkeeper Kenzie Bermudez (eight saves). UWS, though, took a 2-1 lead just 46 seconds later when Schussman connected with Street for the finish.
The 'Jackets switched goalies at halftime with
Morgan Philliber (Apple Valley, Minn./Edina) taking over for
Madison Gutekunst (Mound, Minn./Mound Westonka), who made two saves in the first half and improved to 1-2-1 in the win. Philliber stopped to shots.
Schussman scored her first goal of the day from
Kaylie Johnson (Amery, Wis./Amery) in the 75th minute for a 3-1 edge. She added the second 11 minutes later from Street for the final margin.
Superior outshot Alverno (1-2-0) 28-10, including 12-5 in shots on goal. The 'Jackets
UWS is back in action Wednesday at 5 p.m., against St. Mary's.
