HANCOCK, Mich. – The UW-Superior men's basketball team earned its first non-conference road victory in more than two seasons with a 116-70 drubbing of Finlandia at Paavo Nurmi Center Wednesday.
Eighteen Yellowjackets saw the floor and 14 scored points for UWS in the comprehensive victory. It marked the most points scored by Superior since beating UW-Whitewater, 119-101, Feb. 13, 1976 at home.
Three scored double figures, led by senior
Allen Anderson (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo) with a game-high 22 on 9-of-12 shooting. Anderson shot 4-for-5 from distance as the 'Jackets drained a season-best 14 3-pointers.
Vid Milenkovic (Zurich, Switzerland/DSB Belgrade (Serbia)) chipped in with 19 points and 10 rebounds for his third consecutive double-double performance, while freshman
Eli Vogel (Appleton, Wis./Appleton West) poured in a career-high 14 points in just 18 minutes. The win is Superior's first outside of league play away from home since beating Marian in the final game of the UW-Stout Tip-Off Tournament Nov. 18, 2017.
UWS shot a season-high 60 percent from the field, hitting on 42-of-70 attempts to improve to 9-6 on the season. The 'Jackets also dominated the glass, outrebounding Finlandia (0-17), 52-23, including 17-7 offensively. UWS also controlled the inside, collecting 50 points in the paint.
Leading, 15-11, five minutes in, the 'Jackets used a 17-5 run to provide separation, doubling up Finlandia, 32-16 with 6:26 left in the first half. UWS led, 50-27, at the break, before putting up 66 points in the second half, leaving no doubt in the outcome.
Mason Ackley (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) scored nine points and
Mac Reykdal (Washburn, Wis./Washburn) had seven.
Josef Fahrenholtz (Chatfield, Minn./Chatfield),
Thomas Robarge (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls Senior),
Spencer Mellberg (Appleton, Wis./Appleton West) and Jackson Mittlestadt each posted career-high point totals with eight, eight, six and five points, respectively.
Dylan Underwood paced Finlandia with 20 points and eight assists.
Superior returns to Mertz Mortorelli Gym for the first time in more than a month Saturday, hosting Minnesota Morris in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference action. Tip time is set for 3 p.m.
