RIVER FALLS, Wis. – Junior
Amanda Sergent (Eagle River, Wis./Northland Pines) scored a goal and two assists, but seventh-ranked UW-River Falls got goals from four different skaters to prevail, 4-3, at Hunt Arena on Thursday.
Sergent collected the seventh multiple-point game of her career and fourth this season as the Yellowjackets dropped their third straight game to top-10 teams. Senior
Kaleigh Martinson (Dayton, Minn./Champlin Park) registered two assists for UWS, which fell to 9-5-1 and 2-4-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with the loss. The Falcons improved to 14-3-1 and 5-1-0 in the WIAC.
The 'Jackets battled back from two-goal deficits two times, but were unable to score the tying goal.
UWRF opened the scoring at 10:44 of the first period as Callie Hoff pounced on the rebound of a Hailey Herdine shot. The Falcons doubled the lead when Kiana Gilbraith's point shot found its way through a screen and past goaltender
Catherine Johnson (Lakeville, Minn./St. Paul Academy) at 2:29 of the second period.
Jenna Curtis (Webster, Wis./Webster) got Superior on the board four minutes later. She cut right to left in the slot, firing a shot that beat Sami Miller high to the stick side. Martinson and Sergent assisted on Sergent's seventh goal of the season, making it 2-1.
Abigail Stow scored midway through the period on assists from Madi Nolan and Herdine, restoring a two-goal edge for the Falcons.
C.C. Hayes (Fort Frances, Ontario/Fort Frances) cut into the lead again, cashing in on the 'Jackets' only power play of the game at 15:25 of the period, pulling her team back to within one heading to the final 20 minutes. Sergent assisted on what was just the sixth power-play goal of the year for UWS.
The teams traded goals in the third with Maddie McCollins scoring from Erica Schramel at 12:42 and Sergent answering just 1:34 later. Miller left a big rebound for Sergent, kicking out a shot from Martinson. Sergent made no mistake, burying it to give her team a chance for the tie.
Miller, though, made saves on Hayes and
Molly Shelton (Pine Island, Minn./Pine Island) while the River Falls defense blocked five shots, four of which came with Johnson out for an extra attacker, down the stretch.
Johnson turned away 31 shots while Miller stopped 28 on the night.
The series now shifts to Wessman Arena Saturday as the teams meet again at 2 p.m.
