SUPERIOR, Wis. – Senior
Kaleigh Martinson (Dayton, Minn./Champlin Park) scored with 7:17 remaining in the third period and the UW-Superior women's hockey team hung on to top seventh-ranked UW-River Falls, 2-1, at Wessman Arena Saturday.
Martinson's game winner off the rebound of an
Amanda Sergent (Eagle River, Wis./Northland Pines) shot gave the Yellowjackets their second win over a ranked opponent this season. UWS also beat Gustavus Adolphus Jan. 10 when the Gusties were ranked No. 4 in the country.
Amber Heidenreich (Phillips, Wis./Hayward) also assisted on the Martinson's 14th goal of the season. The win moved the 'Jackets to 10-5-1 and 3-4-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. It was the first win against the Falcons since Jan. 30, 2016, breaking an eight-game losing streak in the series.
Sophomore
McKenzie Whalen (East Grand Forks, Minn./East Grand Forks) stopped a season-high 35 shots to improve to 4-1-0 on the season. She turned aside 15 in the third period, including six in the final minutes after the go-ahead goal.
Freshman
Ashley Schintz (Isanti, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) opened the scoring at 17:02 of the first period off of assists from
Tessa Jorde (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln) and
Kaylee Wood (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park).
River Falls (14-4-1, 5-2-0 WIAC) knotted the game, 1-1, at 10:07 of the second period on a goal from Reilly Springman. Kora Torkelson and Kathryn Larson assisted on the equalizer before the 'Jackets went ahead in the third.
The Falcons pulled goaltender Sami Miller for an extra attack with 37 seconds remaining and also benefitted from a slashing minor assessed to Martinson, for a 6-on-4 advantage for the final 16.5 seconds.
UWRF called its timeout to draw up a faceoff play, but the 'Jackets blocked shots from Abigail Stow and Ericca Schramel to ensure the victory.
Miller made 31 saves, falling to 11-2-1 on the year.
Superior is back in action Friday when it hosts Finlandia to open a weekend series at 7 p.m.
