SUPERIOR, Wis. – Senior
Emily Carpenter (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter) scored a career-high 25 points on 7-for-13 shooting from 3-point range to help the UW-Superior women's basketball team to 62-55 victory over Crown at Mertz Mortorelli Gym Saturday.
Â
Junior
Ellie Leadstrom (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) added a career-best 14 points as the Yellowjackets rebounded from a Wednesday loss at Northwestern. With the win, UWS improved to 11-6 overall and 7-2 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference. Crown hung around all game, and was only trailing by 11 at the beginning of the fourth quarter, 50-39.Â
Â
Patricia Gibson hit a layup with 8:54 remaining on an assist by Stevey De La Ossa, to pull the Storm to within single digits, before an
Eva Reinertsen (Duluth, Minn./Homeschooled) jumper and
Marissa Ruiz (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) free throw restored a 12-point margin. Crown (4-12, 1-8 UMAC) wouldn't go away, though.Â
Â
Damonyka Roberts' old-fashioned 3-point play cut the lead to 53-44 with 6:11 left. Superior then used a 7-0 spurt, keyed by a Carpenter trey, to push the lead to 16 and later 17 on a
Kaelyn Christian (St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville Senior) bucket in transition.
Â
Crown had one more rally in it, scoring the game's final 10 points, but ran out of time.Â
Â
The 'Jackets were held to 36.7 percent shooting on the day, but had 18 assists on their 22 baskets. UWS turned Crown over 19 times and scored 25 points on those miscues.
Â
Roberts led Crown with 15 points while Gibson had nine rebounds. De La Ossa chipped in with 13 points and a team-best five assists.
Â
Superior returns to action Wednesday, hosting Northland at 7:15 p.m.
