Pitching, Defense Carry Black Over White

10/10/2020 4:09:00 PM

SUPERIOR, Wis. - The Yellowjacket softball team returned to diamond Saturday morning just 38 hours removed from the first game of their super series. Team White took the series opener over Black, 14-4, in a game where the bats were red hot. In game two the bats were just as hot, but the defense proved to be the contributing factor as Team Black grabbed a 2-0 lead early in the first inning and never looked back.

Tayler Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) started in the circle for Team Black and pitched six innings, allowing one earned one on zero hits. She struck out five batters before letting teammate Malania Madill (Canyon, Minn./South Ridge) take over. Madill pitched the last four innings allowing one earned run on three hits and striking out two.

On the opposing side, Marley Burd (Glendale, Ariz./Centennial) allowed four earned runs on four hits in her two innings pitched for Team White. She struck out five. Josie Steen (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet Senior) relieved Burd for third inning and pitched the rest of the way, allowing six earned runs on eight hits. She struck out six.

Black and White both looked better on defense making clean, accurate throws all game long. All of the little things seemed easy to both teams as they looked sharp and focused.

The top of the order came to play for Team Black. Tiffany Kirk (McHenry, Ill./McHenry East) and Bryton Kukowski (Duluth, Minn./Hermantown) both went 2-for-6 with a combined three-runs scored and six RBI's. Tayler Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) went 3-for-8, scoring six runs. Team Black had twelve hits in today's game.

Burd, Steen and Deja Mendez (West Saint Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) each recorded a hit for Team White, while Kaela Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) drove in a run for Team Black.

The Yellowjackets return to action with their third, and final, exhibition game next Thursday, October 15. Opening pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.
