Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

‘Jackets Cruise by Minnesota Morris, 70-63

MORRIS, Minn. – Senior Eva Reinertsen (Duluth, Minn./Homeschooled) led all players with 26 points and 11 rebounds as the UW-Superior women's basketball team topped Minnesota Morris, 70-63, on Saturday.

Reinertsen registered her eighth double-double of the season while classmates Emily Carpenter (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter) and Marissa Ruiz (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) added 15 and 14 points, respectively, to help the Yellowjackets complete a regular-season sweep of the Cougars.

Reinertsen finished 10-for-19 from the field and 5-for-5 from the free-throw line.

UWS (13-6, 9-2 UMAC) led, 24-16, after one quarter and 41-29 at halftime. The 'Jackets held a 56-44 edge entering the fourth quarter.

The teams traded baskets for much of the first quarter before Reinertsen finished a fastbreak layup and Carpenter stole the ball and hit a 3-pointer for a 19-12 lead with 2:07 to play in the period. After a Morris bucket, Mackenzie Kmecik (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) hit a jumper, assisted by Mady Sanders (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial), and Ruiz canned a trey for a 24-14 advantage with a minute left.

Abby Van Kampen, who earlier in the game reached the 1,000-point milestone, hit a free throw to cut the deficit to 24-20 at the seven-minute mark. On the strength of an offensive rebound and another triple from Ruiz the led was back in double digits at 32-22 with 5:40 left in the half. It grew to as many as 13 at 41-28 on a Carpenter 3-pointer, assisted by Kaelyn Christian (St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville Senior), inside the final minute.

Christian pushed the lead to 15 with 3:26 left in the third on a layup that made it a 53-38 game. Mikayla Koivisto (Floodwood, Minn./Floodwood) closed the period with a 3-pointer, off of a Carpenter assist, for the 12-point edge going into the final 10 minutes.

Morris shaved the deficit to nine in the final minute of the game but could get no closer.

Van Kampen paced Minnesota Morris (10-9, 5-5) with 20 points and 10 rebounds.

The 'Jackets next head to Eau Claire for Monday date with the Blugolds. Tip time at Zorn Arena is 7 p.m.
