Dulong’s OT Goal, Whalen’s 28 Saves Propel ‘Jackets to Win at Stevens Point

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Junior Megan Dulong (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) scored with 1:03 left in overtime to lift the UW-Superior women's hockey team to a 1-0 win over UW-Stevens Point at Ice Hawks Arena Friday.

Dulong's unassisted tally – her third goal of the season – came shortly after the Yellowjackets killed off the 10th Pointers' power play of the night.

Sophomore goaltender McKenzie Whalen (East Grand Forks, Minn./East Grand Forks) earned her second shutout of the season, making 28 saves for UWS, which improved to 14-6-1 overall and 4-5-0 in the WIAC. UWSP fell to 7-10-6 and 1-7-3 with the loss. The 'Jackets will be eyeing the season-series sweep Saturday when the teams meet at 2 p.m. Superior has not swept the series since taking both games between the two Feb. 8-9 of 2013 in Stevens Point.

A penalty-filled game, the 'Jackets took 12 for 35 minutes, while the Pointers had eight for 16. Superior thwarted all 10 power play opportunities, including a hooking penalty to Tessa Jorde (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln) at 1:40 of the extra session.

Whalen (6-1-0) made nine saves in the first and third periods and 10 in the second and her defense blocked 23 shots. Junior forward Amanda Sergent (Eagle River, Wis./Northland Pines) posted a game-high nine blocks and sophomore defender Jamie Davison (Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna) had four.

Senior Kaleigh Martinson (Dayton, Minn./Champlin Park) fired a game-best seven of the 'Jackets' 40 shots on the night.

UW-Stevens Point goalie Olivia Schultz was also strong in net for the hosting, turning aside 39 shots.
