STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Senior
Molly Shelton (Pine Island, Minn./Pine Island) scored a short-handed goal 1:52 into overtime to power the UW-Superior women's hockey team to a weekend and season-series sweep of UW-Stevens Point, 3-2, on Saturday at Ice Hawks Arena.
With the Yellowjackets killing the Pointers' seventh power play of the game, Shelton potted her third goal of the season on an assist from
Kaleigh Martinson (Dayton, Minn./Champlin Park) for Superior's second consecutive overtime victory. The goal was the 'Jackets second short-handed tally of the day and improved them to 15-6-1 overall and 5-5-0 in the WIAC.
Both Shelton and Martinson collected a goal and assist for the game, helping UWS to its first season sweep of the Pointers since the 2012-13 season. The 'Jackets are now 3-0-2 in their last five games in the series.
Sophie Regonic opened the scoring at 11:07 of the second period for UWSP on the power play from Emma Berthiume. Sophomore
C.C. Hayes (Fort Frances, Ontario/Fort Frances) tied it, 1-1 at 16:40 from Shelton, before Martinson scored short-handed and unassisted at 3:21 of the third for the lead.
Maddie Monroe tied it 3:05 later off of an assist by Mary Kremer. Neither team could break through again in regulation.
Whalen picked up her second straight win in net for the 'Jackets, making 32 saves, including the only four of overtime.
Stevens Point (7-11-6, 1-8-3) was 2-for-7 on the power play while UWS was held scoreless with the extra skater in four chances.
Marit Larson made 27 saves and took the loss in the Pointers' goal.
UWS hosts Gustavus Adolphus Tuesday at 7 p.m., at Wessman Arena in its final regular-season non-conference game.
