SUPERIOR, Wis. - The Yellowjacket women's hockey team finally got the chance to take on Gustavus on home ice. The game was supposed to be played November 26, but the beginnings of Winter Storm Ezekiel prevented the contest from being played, so 84 days later the Yellowjackets and the Gusties finally met at Wessman Arena, in what was the final regular season home game of the 2019-20 season for the Yellowjackets.
But the final regular season home game came on a night when not much went right for the Yellowjackets. Gustavus scored early in both the first and third periods on the way to a 3-0 shutout of the Yellowjackets.
Freshman goaltender Katie McCoy stopped 34 shots for Gustavus, to earn the win and her fifth shutout of the season.
Gustavus got the scoring started early when Emily Olson batted home a rebound to the right of the Yellowjacket net to make it 1-0 just 49 seconds into the first period. Olson added a second goal at 5:43 of the first period, snapping a shot from the right circle past the glove of Yellowjacket goaltender
McKenzie Whalen (East Grand Forks, Minn./East Grand Forks) to make it 2-0.
The Gusties closed out the scoring at 1:16 of the third period, and again it was Olson doing the damage. This time she deflected a Jordyn Peterson shot past Whalen, completing the hat trick on the power play to make the final score 3-0.
Whalen, who was making her third straight start, was denied the chance for a fifth straight win. She finished the game with 39 saves, a career high.
Tuesday's contest was the final non-conference game of the season for the Yellowjackets (15-7-1, 5-5-0 WIAC), who are locked into the No. 3 seed in the WIAC playoffs. They close out the season with a pair of games at Northland College Friday and Saturday.
