SUPERIOR, Wis. –The UW-Superior women's tennis team earned its first win of the season Sunday with a 5-4 decision over Concordia (Minn.) at Lydia Thering Fieldhouse.
The Yellowjackets took two of the three doubles matches with
Alison Tollas (Ashland, Wis./Ashland) and
Breanna Wienen (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln) topping Abby Westrum and Emily Savageau, 8-1, at No. 3 to take the early 1-0 lead.
Maya Callaway (Duluth, Minn./East) and
Kitana Honkola (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert) then beat Raquel Egge and Jenna Forknell, 8-6, on No. 1 before
Emily Wald (Antigo, Wis./Antigo) and
Maura Halverson (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd) dropped an 8-7 (7-1) match to Carolyn Voss and Taylor Partington.
The teams split the six singles matches as Honkola made it 3-2 with a three-set win over Partington on court 4, 4-6, 6-3, 10-8.
Emily Wald (Antigo, Wis./Antigo) lengthened the lead to 4-2 with a 7-5, 6-3, win over Voss at No. 3. Egge pulled the Cobbers back to 4-3 with a 6-3, 7-6 (10-8) win at the top flight, but Wienen took out Brianna Bell on court 5, 6-3, 6-4 to clinch the match for the 'Jackets.
The win marked the first of head coach
CeeJay Schaffner's career and moved UWS to 1-3 on the season. Concordia falls to 2-2 with the loss.
Superior next takes on Iowa Central in exhibition action Sunday at 1 p.m., before heading to Florida to play six matches over spring break, starting with UW-La Crosse on March 16.
