SUPERIOR, Wis.: In the sports world, it doesn't get much better than a good rivalry. They intensify over time, and often either team stands a great chance to win whenever they take the field, court, or rink. A rivalry can, at the same time, bring out the best and worst of teams, communities, and fan bases.
For Yellowjacket sports teams, you need look no further than the hill across the bay to find that rival. Separated by a body of water and three bridges, UW-Superior and the College of St. Scholastica is a rivalry that is as intense as it gets, no matter the sport or time of year.
The latest chapter in the rivalry came Tuesday night when the Yellowjacket women's hockey team hosted the Saints at Wessman Arena. The teams met earlier in the year at Mars-Lakeview Arena in Duluth, with the Yellowjackets picking up the 2-0 win. Tuesday they were able to pick up the season sweep, scoring three times in the second period on the way to a 3-1 victory.
With the win, the Yellowjackets (13-5-1, 3-4-0 WIAC) extended their winning streak to four games and completed the season sweep of the Saints for the just the second time. The previous sweep came in 2010-11, the first year St. Scholastica iced a women's hockey program.
The Yellowjackets outshot the Saints 17-2 in the first period but came away empty handed. They started the second period with a barrage of shots on goal, but again struggled to light the lamp. That changed when they broke through at 6:42.
Kaylee Wood (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park) did the honors, breaking into the St. Scholastica zone and wiring a wrist shot from the left circle over goaltender Lori Huseby's shoulder on the short side.
Lauren Niska (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria Area) assisted on the Wood's fourth goal of the year.
A few minutes later the Yellowjackets increased the lead. This time
Molly Shelton (Pine Island, Minn./Pine Island) broke into the Saints' zone on the right wing and slid a perfect pass to
Amber Heidenreich (Phillips, Wis./Hayward) on the left wing. Heidenreich got Huseby to commit and pulled the puck to her backhand before sliding it into the wide-open net for a 2-0 lead at 9:47. It was the fourth goal of the year for Heidenreich.
St. Scholastica cut the Yellowjacket lead in half at 16:10 when Rachel Anderson scored. The Yellowjackets answered that goal quickly, however. With 1:43 to play in the second, team scoring leader
Kaleigh Martinson (Dayton, Minn./Champlin Park) worked her way to the front of the net and lifted a shot past Huseby for her 19th of the year, making the score 3-1. For Martinson, it was the 58th goal of her Yellowjacket career, putting her in sole possession of second place on the all-time goals list. She trails only Erin Kegley. The four-time All-American scored 90 times in her career.
Both teams clamped down defensively in the third period. There was no scoring and each team was credited with just four shots on goal.
McKenzie Whalen (East Grand Forks, Minn./East Grand Forks) got the start in goal and earned the win for the Yellowjackets. She made 12 saves in the game, improving to 5-1-0 on the year. The Yellowjackets outshot the Saints 40-13 for the game.
