Story Links

SUPERIOR, Wis. – Your first collegiate goal. It's a milestone. It's special. It's something you don't forget. In other words, it's a really big deal.

There's scoring your first collegiate goal, and there's doing what Mya Holmquist (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo ) did in Friday's match against Crown. The rookie forward scored her first goal early, later in the half made it a hat trick, and then bagged one more for good measure.

The four-goal effort gave the Yellowjackets an insurmountable lead and they tacked on another goal in the second half to cruise past Crown 5-0 Friday at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.

With the win, the Yellowjackets (6-3-0, 4-0-0 UMAC) are now on a four-match winning streak heading into play Saturday.

Holmquist got things going in the 18th minute, getting a rebound of a Claire Smith (Hayward, Wis./Hayward) shot and putting it into the lower right corner to make it 1-0.

About 15 minutes later the Yellowjackets offense exploded, or rather, Holmquist went off on one of the most impressive scoring streaks in history.

She scored her second of the match, a ball into the lower right corner at 31:12 to make it 2-0. Holmquist found the back of the net again just 14 seconds later, completing her hat trick and pushing the lead to 3-0. Then, 61 seconds later, Holmquist got a pass from Emma Street (Oak Grove, Minn./St. Francis) and converted for her fourth goal, and the 'Jackets were up 4-0.

For those keeping track, that's four goals in 15:09, with the last three coming in a stretch of 1:15, making the public address announcer sound like a broken record.

The Yellowjackets added to the lead in the 55th minute when team scoring leader Niya Wilson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) potted her ninth on the year, finishing off a great passing play with a deflection into the lower left corner to make it a 5-0 game.

Wilson's goal also activated the Five Goal Free for All, giving everyone in attendance a coupon for a free scoop of custard from Culver's in Superior.

Annah Schussman (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) had three assists in the match and Claire Smith (Hayward, Wis./Hayward) had two to help pace the Yellowjacket offense, but the day belonged to Holmquist and her quartet of goals. Holmquist shot up the team scoring chart and is now second in goals (four) and tied for second in points (11), behind only Wilson in both categories.

For the match, the Yellowjackets outshot Crown 22-6, and shots on goal favored the 'Jackets 15-3.

At the other end of the pitch, Jenna Lang (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) got the start and picked up the win to improve to 5-2-0 on the year. She played the first 45 minutes and finished with three saves. Morgan Philliber (Apple Valley, Minn./Edina) came on in the second half and played the full 45 minutes without recording a save.

The shutout was the fourth in a row for the Yellowjackets, who haven't allowed a goal in their last 372:54.

The Yellowjackets will look to make it five wins in a row when they host Minnesota Morris Saturday. The opening kick is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.
