SUPERIOR, Wis. – No doubt about it, the Yellowjacket women's soccer team is on a roll.
The offense is clicking, the defense has been nearly flawless, and most importantly, the Yellowjackets have been winning.
Saturday afternoon the Yellowjackets put it all on display Saturday afternoon, as they played host to Minnesota Morris at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex. And once again, the formula was a recipe for success.
The Yellowjackets scored three times in each half and battled torrential rains throughout to pick up a 6-1 win over the Cougars. The win, the fifth straight for the Yellowjackets, improves their overall record to 7-3-0 to go along with a 5-0-0 mark in the UMAC.
Niya Wilson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior), as she has done throughout the season, paced the Yellowjackets offensively, scoring four times in the match to raise her team-leading goal total to 13. But before she got to scoring herself, Wilson started things off with an assist.
Early in the match the ball ping-ponged around the box. Wilson settled the ball down and tipped a pass to
Annah Schussman (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji), who made a quick move to her right and used her right foot to drive home her fourth goal of the year in the 18th minute to make it 1-0.
Wilson then struck twice in quick succession, finding the back of the net twice in less than a minute, to give the Yellowjackets some breathing room.
In the 27th minute Schussman took a pass on the left side from
Kenzie Oehlerking (Farmington, Minn./Farmington Area) and broke down the wing. She waited out the defense then centered to Wilson, who spun around and right-footed the ball home from 10 yards out. She made it 3-0 just 57 seconds later, teaming up with Schussman once again and scoring in tight.
The rain intensified in the second half, but it did nothing to slow the Yellowjackets down.
Wilson completed her hat trick in the 59th minute, scoring on a free kick from about 30 yards out to make it a 4-0 match.
About 10 minutes later the Yellowjackets increased their lead to 5-0.
Tori Vosburg (Cloquet, Minn./Esko) broke down the left side and centered to Wilson, who simply redirected the ball from 10 yards out for her fourth goal of the match.
The Yellowjackets got their final goal of the match with just over 14 minutes to go. Vosburg carried the ball up the left side and moved it over to
Ava Giswold (Duluth, Minn./Proctor), and the freshman made no mistake, connecting from about 15 yards out and driving a shot into the upper right corner for her first collegiate goal.
Morris broke the shutout bid in the final ten minutes, but it was too little too late and the Yellowjackets cruised to victory.
Wilson had four goals and nine points in the match, while Schussman had a goal and four points to lead the way offensively.
At the other end,
Jenna Lang (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) made the start in goal and didn't record any saves in the first 45 minutes. She was credited with the win, and her record on the year improves to 6-2-0 on the year.
Morgan Philliber (Apple Valley, Minn./Edina) came on and played the second half for the Yellowjackets.
The goal scored by Morris snapped a lengthy shutout streak for the Yellowjackets. It was the first goal allowed in a span of 453:27 going back to the game against UW-Stout Sept. 15.
After playing seven of their first ten matches at home, the Yellowjackets will not take to the road. They'll be at Northwestern Friday, Oct. 8 with first place in the UMAC on the line. The opening kick is set for 4:30 p.m. in St. Paul, Minn.
