NEW ULM, Minn. – The UW-Superior women's soccer team scored four times in the second half on its way to a 4-1 victory over Martin Luther at MLC Soccer Field on Friday.
With the win, the Yellowjackets improve to 10-3-0 overall, tying the single-season record for wins in in program history. The 2005 and 2006 squads were 10-8-1 and 10-9-0, respectively.
UWS, which also remains perfect in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference at 8-0-0, scored all four goals in a 16-minute span after halftime. Sophomore
Allison Alessi (Shakopee, Minn./Prior Lake) opened the scoring in the 59th minute with her third goal of the season on a low shot to the far post from the six-yard box.Classmate
Niya Wilson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) earned the assist on the play.
Four minutes later, sophomore
Tori Vosburg (Cloquet, Minn./Esko) notched her first goal of the season on a deflection off of a corner kick. Vosburg drilled it off the far post and past MLC goalkeeper Grace Sievert.
Freshman
Ava Giswold (Duluth, Minn./Proctor) made it 3-0 when she took a pass from
Erika Schneider (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West) and chipped the ball over Sievert in the 70th minute for her second goal of the season.
Junior
Kenzie Oehlerking (Farmington, Minn./Farmington Area) added insurance with a penalty-kick goal in the 74th, before MLC's Hannah Schroederaccounted for the final margin with a goal in the 85th minute.
Freshman goalie
Jenna Lang (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) made four saves, including three in the second half, moving to 8-2-0 on the year with the win. Sievert stopped nine Superior shots and fell to 3-8-1 overall.
The Knights dropped to 3-9-1 overall and 2-6-1 in the league.
The Yellowjackets held a 24-11 advantage in total shots and 14-5 in shots on target. The teams had three corner kicks apiece.
UWS heads to Bethany Lutheran Saturday for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
