NEW ULM, Minn. – "These go to 11."
Â
In the movie this is Spinal Tap, the band members are describing their equipment and when they get to the amplifiers, they remark that theirs are louder because they "go to 11" instead of 10, which is typical of volume control knobs.
Â
And as of Saturday, the Yellowjacket women's soccer team also goes to 11.
Â
A day after tying the program record with their 10th win of the 2021 season, the Yellowjackets established a new school record by picking up win No. 11.
Â
The goals didn't come in the first half, but the Yellowjackets scored twice in the second half to pick up a 2-0 win over Bethany Lutheran Saturday afternoon in Mankato, Minn. The victory extended the program-best winning streak to nine, and pushed the Yellowjackets to 11-3-0 overall and a perfect 9-0-0 in the Upper Midwest Athletics Conference, where they reside atop the standings, one game ahead of Northwestern.
Â
Jenna Lang (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) got the start in goal for the Yellowjackets and earned the shutout, her third of the season, and improved her record to 9-2-0 on the year. Bethany Lutheran attempted 16 shots in the match to the Yellowjackets' 15, but only three made it on target and Lang was there to stop all three.
Â
Following a scoreless first half the Yellowjackets came out and found their offensive game in the second. They broke the ice in the 67th minute when
Ava Giswold (Duluth, Minn./Proctor) got the ball to
Annah Schussman (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji), and the Yellowjacket senior drove a shot into the top right corner to give the 'Jackets the 1-0 lead.
Â
Schussman struck again in the 79th minute, send a shot that caromed off the post and into the goal for a 2-0 lead.
Ava Giswold (Duluth, Minn./Proctor) and
Brenna Mattson (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet Senior) assisted on the play. For Schussman, the goals were Nos. 7 and  8 of the season and she now has 27 for career, putting her just five shy of the program record of 32 set by Elyse Dowdell from 2004-08.
Â
Schussman also led the Yellowjackets with nine shots attempted and six shots on goal. Shots on goal favored the Yellowjackets 8-3.
Â
The Yellowjackets are back in action Tuesday, Oct. 19 when they travel to take on St. Scholastica. The opening kick is set for 3:30 p.m. at Saints Field in Duluth.
