DULUTH, Minn. – Sophomore forward
Allison Alessi (Shakopee, Minn./Prior Lake) scored goals on either side of halftime as the UW-Superior women's soccer team topped its bridge rival St. Scholastica, 2-1, at Saints Field on Tuesday.
The win for the Yellowjackets marked just their second in 20 all-time matches against CSS with the other coming in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference semifinal on Oct. 31, 2018. The victory also gave UWS the Golden Anchor in the first match of the series since the Saints departed for the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference following the conclusion of last season.
Alessi opened the scoring in the 21st minute, taking a pass from classmate
Niya Wilson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) and firing a shot from just outside the box past St. Scholastica goalkeeper Taelynn Gittins for the lead.
That's the way it stayed until the 60th minute when Morgan Friday found the equalizer with an unassisted tally. It didn't take long for Superior to regain the lead, though. Freshman
Mya Holmquist (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo ) lofted a pass to Alessi eight minutes later that she put away from the top of the box for the lead and her fifth goal of the year.
From there, the 'Jackets played solid defense to hold the lead. Freshman goalkeeper
Jenna Lang (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) was forced to make a save on Ellie Keillor in the 83rd minute just before senior
Annah Schussman (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) nearly provided an insurance goal for UWS in 86th, but Gittins made a strong save on that bid.
Lang, who improved to 10-2-0, finished with five saves to help UWS (12-3-0) secure its 10th consecutive win. Gittins fell to 0-3-1 on the season, making six saves, including five after halftime.
The 'Jackets outshot St. Scholastica (3-9-3), 12-11, and 8-6 in shots on frame. The Saints had five corner kicks to two for Superior.
Next up, UWS hosts North Central Friday. Kickoff at NBC Spartan Sports Complex is set for 1 p.m.
