St. Scholastica Sweeps Yellowjackets

DULUTH, Minn. – Four St. Scholastica players recorded at least six kills and the Saints hit .299 as a team in sweeping the UW-Superior volleyball team at Reif Gym in non-conference action on Tuesday.

CSS took care of the Yellowjackets in just 67 minutes, ending Superior's four-match winning streak. The Saints' Madissen Burns collected a match-high-tying 11 kills on 22 swings to lead the CSS attack, which totaled 42 kills and just 10 errors in the match.

Junior Cassy Teff (Foley, Minn./Foley) tallied 11 kills for UWS (9-14), which was limited to just .071 on attack by 24 errors. Sophomore Kaylin Plautz (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) chipped in with seven kills while senior Megan Holz (Savage, Minn./Burnsville Senior) dished out 20 of the team's 31 assists. Teff recorded a team-best 15 digs to complete her seventh double-double of the season.

The Yellowjackets jumped out to an early 3-1 lead in the opening set on a Plautz kill, but CSS rallied for a 12-8 advantage with a block by Burns and Delaney Schaeffer.  St. Scholastica extended the lead to 17-11 before Superior got to within three with the help of an Alexie Pryd (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove Senior) ace for a 17-14 deficit.

The Saints later used a 4-1 run, closing the set with a Burns kill at 25-18. CSS hit a match-best .313 in the first set with 12 kills.

CSS (3-9) opened a 10-4 lead in the second set and cruised to a 25-16 win to go up, 2-0, in the match. St. Scholastica posted 16 kills in the middle stanza, its most in any of the three sets.

The third set was tied, 5-5, on a Holz kill from Teff, prior to a four-point run by CSS that featured a pair of kills and a pair UWS errors to make it 9-5. An 8-0 stretch gave the host an 20-9 lead and the Saints closed out the match 10 points later for a 25-14 win.

Next up, UWS travels to 17th-ranked Northwestern Friday at 7 p.m.
