SUPERIOR, Wis. – Sophomore forward
Niya Wilson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) buried an 88th-minute penalty kick to help the UW-Superior women's soccer team earn a 1-1 draw with Northwestern in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference action at NBC Spartan Sports Complex on Saturday.
Senior
Annah Schussman (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) was bodied down in the box, creating the opportunity for Wilson, who calmly stepped up and sent the ball to near corner of the net for the equalizer.
The top two teams in the UMAC standings played 20 minutes of extra time without further scoring. The draw ensured the Yellowjackets will hold the tiebreaker over the Eagles with just three matches remaining in the regular season for UWS.
Northwestern's Megan Moeller gave the Eagles the lead in the 67th minute. On the goal, Moeller had the ball at her feet 30 yards from goal, got around a defender and fired a shot over UWS goalkeeper
Jenna Lang (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) from just outside the 18-yard box. Moeller's 17th goal of the season came on UNW's second shot on goal of the match.
Superior carried the play in the first half, outshooting the Eagles, 15-2, while seeing 65 percent of possession. Northwestern goalie Ellie Fryer (9-5-1) stood tall, though, turning away all eight shots she faced.
The Eagles (10-5-1, 10-1-1) got UWS out of its rhythm after halftime and held a 13-6 advantage in shots for the final 65 minutes of play. Each team had a shot on frame in extra time with Lang stopping Moeller in the 105th minute and sophomore
Lindrey Schendel (Firestone, Colo./Skyline) getting a bid turned aside in the final minute.
Fryer finished with nine saves on the day and Lang (11-2-1) had two for UWS.
The Yellowjackets (13-3-1, 10-0-1), who saw their school-record 11-match winning streak halted, are back in action on Monday, traveling to face North Central. Kickoff at Elliot Park Field in Minneapolis is set for 3:30 p.m.
