MINNEAPOLIS – The UW-Superior women's soccer team exploded for six goals after halftime to coast to a 6-0 victory over North Central in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference action at Elliot Park Field on Monday.
The Yellowjackets received two goals apiece from freshmen
Mya Holmquist (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo ) and
Brenna Mattson (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet Senior) and one each from freshman
Ava Giswold (Duluth, Minn./Proctor) and reigning UMAC Offensive Player of the Week
Allison Alessi (Shakopee, Minn./Prior Lake).
After a scoreless first half, UWS scored three times in the first eight minutes of the second period. Holmquist got things going just 28 seconds into the half with her fifth goal of the season from sophomore
Niya Wilson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) before Mattson scored her first career goal, an unassisted marker, 2:17 later. Alessi then scored her eighth of the year in the 53rd minute on Wilson's second assist of the day.
Superior scored the final three tallies in the last seven minutes of the match. Giswold scored her fourth in the 83rd from senior
Annah Schussman (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) to make it 4-0. Mattson then scored in the 86th from Holmquist, who potted her sixth in the 90th.
The 'Jackets, who improved to 14-3-1 overall and 11-0-1 with the win, outshot North Central, 49-7 with 29 attempts on target. UWS goalkeepers
Jenna Lang (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) and
Morgan Philliber (Apple Valley, Minn./Edina) split time in the net with Lang (12-2-1) playing the first 67:25 and making one save for the victory. Philliber stopped two Rams' shots. Arien Fritts made 20 saves in the NCU net, falling to 2-10-2 on the season.
With the loss, the Rams dropped to 2-12-2 overall and 1-9-2 in the league.
Superior is on the road Friday at Minnesota Morris. Kickoff at Cougar Field in 1 p.m.
