NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Senior forward
Protus Babaya (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) scored a right-footed penalty a minute into the second half to cut the deficit to 2-1, but No. 22 St. Olaf went on to score four more times for a 6-1 non-conference win over the UW-Superior men's soccer team at Rolf Mellby Field on Tuesday.
Five different Oles scored goals, including Shea Bechtel with two in the 38th and 67th minutes. Bechtel's first tally of the day served as the game-winning goal – a low left-footed strike past Superior freshman goalkeeper
Alex Paredes (Mequon, Wis./Homestead).
Liam Vance (25th), Hakeem Morgan (60th), Cole Beaton (81st) and Martin Machon (90th) also scored for the Oles, who improved to 9-1-1 on the season with the win.
Babaya's penalty was his eighth goal of the season.
St. Olaf outshot the Yellowjackets 26-5 overall and 13-4 in shots on target, while controlling 63 percent of possession.
Paredes fell to 5-4-0 in the UWS net with the loss, making seven saves. Austin Williams (9-1-1) earned the victory for St. Olaf with three saves.
Aside from the Babaya goal, Superior shots in the match came from
Blake Perry (Anoka, Minn./Anoka) in the 15th minute,
Nicolai Stokker (Klokkarstua, Norway/St. Hallvard) in the 53rd and
Mackie Ringrose (Ewhurst, England/St Peter's Catholic School) in the 39th and 79th minutes.
UWS (5-5-0) returns to UMAC play Friday at Northwestern. Kickoff is 2 p.m.
