ASHLAND, Wis. – Senior captain
Jamie Davison's (Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna) shot from the midpoint found its way through a screen on the power play at 9:23 of the second period for the game winner as the UW-Superior women's hockey team picked up its first WIAC victory of the season, 3-1, over Northland on Friday.
The Yellowjackets scored once in each period and withstood 1:33 of a 5-of-3 late to improve to 13-0-0 all-time against the LumberJills. Superior got better as the game progressed, outshooting Northland, 42-16, on the night, including 16-6 in the second period and 15-4 in the third.
Seniors
Amanda Sergent (Eagle River, Wis./Northland Pines) and
C.C. Hayes (Fort Frances, Ontario/Fort Frances) had multiple-point efforts as Sergent registered a goal and assist and Hayes tallied a pair of assists.
Freshman goaltender
Molly Black (Devils Lake, N.D./Devils Lake) made 15 saves to earn the victory in her collegiate debut, playing against her sister, Northland's Elle Black, on the opposite bench.
UWS (4-2-0, 1-1-0 WIAC) opened the scoring at 11:20 of the first period on Sergent's fourth goal of the season from Hayes and senior
Jenna Curtis (Webster, Wis./Webster). The 'Jills tied it, 1-1, six minutes later when Kiera Richards deflected a McKenna Freerksen shot over
Molly Black's (Devils Lake, N.D./Devils Lake) shoulder at 17:23.
Davison made it 2-1 in the second period when her shot from the blue line beat Soleil Archambeault through traffic on the power play. Hayes and Sergent assisted on Davison's third career goal.
Sophomore
Kailey Swerhun (Thunder Bay, Ontario/St. Ignatius) doubled the lead, banging home her second goal of the season from the high slot at 3:34 of the third. From there, UWS killed 4:03 of penalties in the third period to ensure the victory.
Northland (0-7-0, 0-3-0) went 0-for-5 on the power play, while the Yellowjackets were 1-for-2.
Archambeault took the loss in the LumberJills' net, turning aside 39 shots.
UWS travels to UW-Stevens Point Saturday. Puck drop against the Pointers at Ice Hawks Arena is set for 2:30 p.m.
