Yellowjackets Outlast Minnesota Morris in Five Sets, Improve to 3-0

MORRIS, Minn. – Three different players posted double-doubles as the UW-Superior volleyball team opened Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play with a come-from-behind, five-set road victory over Minnesota Morris Saturday at Jim Gremmels Court.

Alexie Pryd (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove Senior) led all players with 18 kills and adding 15 digs, Cassy Teff (Foley, Minn./Foley) tallied 15 kills and 12 digs and Megan Holz (Savage, Minn./Burnsville) had 48 assists and 14 digs for the Yellowjackets (3-0, 1-0 UMAC). UWS, which is receiving votes in the first regular-season America Volleyball Coaches Association top 25 poll, won by set scores of 16-25, 25-15, 25-22, 25-27 and 15-12.

The 'Jackets hit .193 as a team, totaled 18 blocks and served up 10 aces on the day. After dropping the first set, they bounced back to win the next two and take a 2-1 lead in the match. Superior opened the second set with a 9-1 run and cruised to victory while taking nine of the final 11 points in the third for that win.

The fourth set went to extra points and the Cougars staved off match point at 24-23 with a Tori Everson kill and claimed the set four points later.  The 'Jackets earned the first three points of the deciding fifth set on a kill by Kaylin Plautz (Elk River, Minn./Elk River), a Holz ace and Pryd kill. Leading, 4-3, UWS ran off the next three and four of the next five points, taking an 8-4 advantage when Teff converted a kill from Holz.

Minnesota Morris scored the next four points to pull even at 8-8, prior to Teff and Pryd combining for a block at 9-9 that began a 4-0 run for the 'Jackets.

A swing from Plautz gave UWS match point at 14-10, which it took advantage of three points later when the Cougars' Mia Frick hit into the block of Pryd and Plautz.

The Cougars (0-1, 0-1 UMAC) also hit .193 with Everson pacing UMM with 17 kills and 24 digs.

UWS returns to action Thursday when it hosts Northland at 7 p.m.
