SUPERIOR, Wis. – Last Saturday, the Yellowjacket men's soccer team found itself in a dogfight against Bethany Lutheran, one that needed overtime before the Yellowjackets emerged the victor. It was one of the closest matches the Yellowjackets have played in recent seasons, and one they were in no hurry to duplicate.
Â
Wednesday Crown College came to town, and the Yellowjackets made it clear very early they wouldn't need overtime to decide the winner.
Â
The Yellowjackets got goals from seven different players, and 12 different players registered at least one point in a dominating 9-0 win over the Storm at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.
With the victory the Yellowjackets improved to 5-0-0 overall and 4-0-0 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference, where they currently sit atop the standings.
Â
It took less than three minutes for the Yellowjackets to open the scoring in this one.
Mason Tynsky (Rochester, Minn./John Marshall) got it started, picking up a loose ball to the left of the goal and scoring his second of the season just 2:56 in.
Â
The score stayed 1-0 for nearly 10 minutes, but then the Yellowjackets turned on the offense in a big way.
Blake Perry (Anoka, Minn./Anoka) scored his seventh of the season at 11:38, then added another goal just about seven minutes later to make it a 3-0 score.
Â
Yellowjacket head coach
Joe Mooney made a mass substitution just shy of 30 minutes into the half, but the players that came in picked up right where the starters left off.
Â
Karsten Kletti (Vadnais Heights, Minn./White Bear Lake Area) scored his first of the year in the 31st minute to make it a four-goal game. Minutes later
Phillip Eriksen (Skjetten, Norway/Lorenskog), who assisted on Kletti's goal, scored his first of the match on an assist from
Andy Rowland (Andover, Minn./Andover) to give the Yellowjackets a 5-0 lead.
Â
In the 41st minute
Sam Waylee Jr. (Abidjan, Ivory Coast/Morning Glory International School) scored his first of the season on assists from
Dylan Hanegraaf (Rose Creek, Minn./Austin) and
Brandon Conklin (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior), pushing the Yellowjacket lead to 6-0. Just 30 seconds later the Yellowjackets scored again, this time with Kletti setting up
Nicolai Stokker (Klokkarstua, Norway/St. Hallvard), and it was a 7-0 score at the half.
Â
The Yellowjackets would tack on two more goals in the second half. Eriksen scored his second of the match at 51:15 to build the lead up to eight.
It stayed that way for much of the second half before the Yellowjackets closed out the scoring.
Adam Wilson (Menomonie, Wis./Menomonie) on an assist from Stokker scored his first of the year with 8:30 to play, making the final score 9-0.
Â
Several Yellowjackets had big games offensively, led by Eriksen who scored twice and had an assist. Tynsky, Perry, Kletti, Stokker, and Conklin all had multiple-point games.
The Yellowjackets attempted 49 shots in the match and finished with 29 shots on goal.
Â
Payton Anderson (Red Wing, Minn./Red Wing) made his first start of the season in goal for the Yellowjackets and earned the win.
Â
After playing three of their first five games at home, the Yellowjackets will now play three in a row on the road beginning Saturday at Minnesota Morris. The opening kickoff is set for 5:00 p.m. at Big Cat Field in Morris, Minnesota.
