SUPERIOR, Wis. – The UW-Superior men's tennis team earned its first-ever victory over Northwestern Wednesday, winning 6-3, to claim the No. 2 seed in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference tournament and a bye to the semifinals on Monday.
The Yellowjackets had been winless in four previous meetings with UNW since restarting the program for the 2017-18 season. UWS will now host the winner of the match between the third-seeded Eagles and No. 6 Bethany Lutheran.
Superior rallied for the victory, winning five singles matches after falling behind, 2-0, in doubles on Wednesday.
Andre Luiz de Melo Guedes (Brasilia, Brazil/Centro de Ensino Médio Paulo Freire) and
Gergo Potz Nagy (Budapest, Hungary/Veres Pálné Secondary Grammar School) got UWS on the board with an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles against Davis Pfaff and Matthew Wedin. Luiz de Melo Guedes then tied the match with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles over Adam Ryerse.
Carter LaMont (Villard, Minn./Minnewaska Area) gave Superior a 3-2 advantage with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Tyrus Studer. The Eagles' Isaac Velgersdyke pulled Northwestern even at 3-3, topping
Lorenzo Korehisa Silva (Sao Paolo, Brazil/Colegio Singular-Santo Andre) 6-3, 7-5, on court five before
Jacob Zacharias (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) outlasted Wedin in a marathon 7-5, 4-6, 11-9 contest.
Gergo Potz Nagy (Budapest, Hungary/Veres Pálné Secondary Grammar School) beat Davis Pfaff 6-4, 6-2 at No.1 and
Michael Janes (Bismarck, N.D./Legacy) beat Stewart Morrell 6-6 (7-5), 6-1 to close the match.
With the win, the 'Jackets improve to 9-5 and 5-1 in the UMAC while Northwestern falls to 18-5 and 4-2.
