ST. PAUL, Minn. – The UW-Superior tennis team's season came to a close with an 8-1 loss to Northwestern in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference semifinals at Johnson Courts on Thursday.
The Yellowjackets' only point on the day came at No. 2 singles where
Emily Wald (Antigo, Wis./Antigo) defeated Belinda Weddle, 6-1, 0-6, 10-3 to make the match 6-1 in favor of the Eagles. UNW took all three doubles matches as Jessica Gross and Sabrina Bush beat
Olivia Roberts (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) and Kayla Christianson, 8-1, at No. 3, Taylar Smith and Elli Dodge topped
Chiyono Owa (Tokyo, Japan/Otsuma Nakano Senior) and
Kallie Olson (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert Senior), 8-2 at No. 2 and Mafee Rinta and Weddle beat
Maya Callaway (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) and Wald, 8-3.
Dodge made it 4-0 Northwestern with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Roberts at No. 5 singles and Bush followed suit with the same scores against
Ririko Miura (Chiba City, Japan/Toho Senior) on court six. Smith then beat Olson at No. 4, 6-1, 6-1.
The final two matches of the day each went three sets as Rinta beat Callaway 6-0, 3-6, 10-3 at No. 1 and Gross beat Owa, 6-4, 4-6, 10-3 at No. 3 to close the match.
With her victory, Wald ends her career as the all-time leader in singles wins with 27, earning 11 in 2018, which is a single-season record. Wald also finishes with the program record of 28 doubles wins.
The 'Jackets' season ends at 6-9 overall while Northwestern improves to 14-5 and advances to face St. Scholastica in the championship match Saturday.
