MINNEAPOLIS –The UW-Superior women's soccer team fired the opening salvo as sophomore
Niya Wilson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) scored in the 12th minute against Augsburg Friday at Edor Nelson Field before the Auggies spoiled the Yellowjackets' upset bid in the second overtime for a 2-1 victory.
Wilson took a feed from classmate
Kenzie Oehlerking (Farmington, Minn./Farmington Area) and slipped the ball past Augsburg goalkeeper Iz Schuster for her third goal of the season, and Superior played strong defense into the second half in front of goalies
Jenna Lang (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) and
Morgan Philliber (Apple Valley, Minn./Edina).
The Auggies pressed all night, firing 31 shots. Lang came up with five first-half saves, while Philliber had four in the second. Augsburg (3-0-1), which had 65 percent of the possession in the match, equalized when Jaelyn Nedelcoff found the back of the net with an unassisted tally.
That's the way it stayed until Jennifer Bobaric's toe poke to the far post 1:13 into the second extra session won it for the Auggies.
Augsburg held an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks and pumped 12 shots on goal.
Aspen Brockhouse (2-0-0) played the second half for Augsburg, making the save on a 71st-minute shot from freshman
Halle Carlson (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown) to earn the victory in net. Philliber (1-1-0) took the loss for the 'Jackets, stopping four shots.
Superior (1-2-0) returns home to NBC Spartan Sports Complex Sunday to host Edgewood. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
