SUPERIOR, Wis. – The regulation 90 minutes weren't enough. An initial 10 minutes of overtime weren't enough either. Then, it looked as if an additional 10 minutes of extra time still wouldn't be enough to decide the winner of the Yellowjacket women's soccer match with Edgewood College Sunday.
The announcement had just been made that the second overtime had entered its final minute, and it was looking as if the Yellowjackets and Eagles would be forced to settle for a draw.
With the score tied 1-1, the Yellowjackets made a rush up the field, and with 45.5 seconds to play, leading scorer
Niya Wilson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) got the ball in tight and directed it past Edgewood's goalkeeper, giving the Yellowjackets a 2-1 win, the first victory on their home turf in 2021.
Claire Smith (Hayward, Wis./Hayward), who scored the first goal of the match for the Yellowjackets started the play, moving the ball up the right side of the field before getting it to the box and forcing it to the middle where Wilson scored her team-leading third goal of the year. The victory, which came in the second straight overtime game for the Yellowjackets, evened their record at 2-2-0.
Edgewood, however, struck the first blow early, getting a goal less than three minutes in to make it 1-0. Marley Satran took the initial shot which was blocked, and Carolyn Evers picked up the rebound and sent it past Yellowjacket goalkeeper
Morgan Philliber (Apple Valley, Minn./Edina).
After a bit of a slow start the Yellowjackets found their footing, and eventually found the back of the net to tie the match.
Allison Alessi (Shakopee, Minn./Prior Lake) started the play, moving the ball to the middle of the field for Wilson, whose shot glanced off a defender and past Edgewood goalkeeper Mackenzie Jones. Smith continued after the ball as it bounced near the goal and sent it home for her first of the year, tying the match 1-1 in the 22nd minute.
In the second half much of the play was at midfield. Edgewood pushed a bit midway through the half, but the Yellowjacket defense only bent and didn't break. When an opportunity came,
Jenna Lang (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial), who came on in relief of Philliber to start the second half, was there to make the stop.
Neither team had great chances in overtime until the Yellowjackets made their move in the final minute of play, setting up Wilson's heroics. The standout sophomore from Superior has scored four of the Yellowjackets' six goals on the year and leads the team with nine points.
Philliber got the start and made two saves on three shots on goal before giving way to Lang. Lang made seven saves in the second half and overtime periods to earn her first collegiate victory.
For the match, the Yellowjackets attempted 16 shots to 23 for Edgewood. Shots on goal also favored the Eagles, 10-6.
The Yellowjackets have one more non-conference match before they begin UMAC play. They will travel to UW-Stout Wednesday, Sept. 15. The opening kick is set for 7 p.m. in Menonomie, Wis.
