SUPERIOR, Wis. – On Friday, the Yellowjacket women's soccer team played a scoreless opening half against Bethany Lutheran before getting a pair of goals in the second half to pick up the conference victory at home.
It was a recipe for success the Yellowjackets, and Saturday when they played host to Martin Luther, they decided to follow those directions again.
After a scoreless first half where they dominated play, the Yellowjackets found their offense, scoring three times on the way to a 3-0 win over the Knights at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.
The win was the third in a row for the Yellowjackets, who now stand at 5-3-0 overall and 3-0-0 in the UMAC. The Yellowjackets have also been stingy defensively of late, as they earned their third straight shutout Saturday. The Yellowjackets have not allowed a goal in their last 282:54.
In the first half the Yellowjackets held a severe territorial advantage. They attempted 14 shots to just two for Martin Luther, and held an 8-1 advantage in shots on goal, but the teams went into the break scoreless.
That changed in the 56th minute.
Annah Schussman (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) got the ball in the middle of the field and, from about 20 yards out belted a kick over the outstretched arms of the Martin Luther goalkeeper high into the goal to make it 1-0. It was the second goal of the year for Schussman.
Less than 10 minutes later the Yellowjackets struck again.
Kenzie Oehlerking (Farmington, Minn./Farmington Area) stole a ball in the middle of the field and moved it ahead to
Niya Wilson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior), and the Yellowjackets' top scorer made no mistake, putting home her eighth goal on the young season to increase the lead to 2-0.
With just over six minutes to play the Yellowjackets salted the game away.
Mya Holmquist (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo ) started the play with a shot from the right side of the box that didn't go, but Schussman got the rebound to the left of the goal and picked up her second of the match, making it 3-0 with 6:25 to play.
The Yellowjacket defense prevented the Knights from generating any offense in the match, and didn't allow a shot on goal in the second half. The 'Jackets attempted 33 shots to two for the Knights, and shots on goal favored the Yellowjackets 19-1. Holmquist had four shots on goal to lead the Yellowjackets, while Schussman, Wilson,
Allison Alessi (Shakopee, Minn./Prior Lake),
Ava Giswold (Duluth, Minn./Proctor) and Oehlerking all had two apiece.
Jenna Lang (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) made her fourth start in a row in the match and played the first 71:37, making one save and picking up the win. She gave way to
Morgan Philliber (Apple Valley, Minn./Edina), who played the final 18:23 and didn't have to make the save.
The Yellowjackets will look to extend their winning streak to four when they host Crown College Friday, Oct. 1. The opening kick is set for 4:30 p.m. at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.
