ST. PAUL, Minn. – Three UW-Superior volleyball players tallied double-figure kills, including a season-high 11 from sophomore
Kaylin Plautz (Elk River, Minn./Elk River), but Hamline erased six match points in the fifth set for a 3-2 victory at Hutton Arena on Tuesday.
Â
Plautz, who has missed much of the season to injury, hit .350 with just four errors in 20 swings out of the middle to go with a career-high-tying five blocks. Junior
Alexie Pryd (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove Senior) added 14 kills, 15 digs and two blocks and classmate
Cassy Teff (Foley, Minn./Foley) chipped in with 11 kills, eight assists and five digs in the loss.
Â
Trailing 2-1 in the match and 12-4 in the fourth set, Hamline (11-3) ran off a 5-2 run, cutting the UWS lead to 14-9. A Sydney Larson kill at 16-10 touched off a 9-0 stretch that gave the Pipers a three-point advantage. Two Pryd kills cut the lead to 19-18 and the teams traded points until HU forced a deciding fifth set with a 25-22 win on a block by Larson and Erin Leverington.
Â
Tied at 8-8 in the fifth, the Yellowjackets (4-11) engineered a five-point run punctuated by a
Megan Holz (Savage, Minn./Burnsville Senior) service ace that gave Superior a 13-8 edge. Two points later, UWS had match point. The Pipers, though, rallied to tie the set at 14-14.Â
Â
Freshman
Maiana Stark (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) gave the 'Jackets another match point with a kill on the next sequence, but a kill and block from Brynn Hendrickson, followed by another block by Julianna Boyum sealed the match for HU.
Â
Superior won the first and third sets on the night, hitting .323 in the latter with 13 kills and three errors. Hamline took the second set, surrendering only nine points before finding its rhythm in the fourth.
Â
Holz finished with a season-best 39 assists and added 13 digs for her fourth double-double of the season.Â
Â
Larson put down a match-high 16 kills, while Rachel Rettman (13) and Boyum and Hendrickson (12 each) also registered double figures in kills. Megan Rubelke had 49 assists, as well.
