DULUTH, Minn. – Senior
Tessa Jorde (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln) scored shorthanded at 15:23 of the second period as the UW-Superior women's hockey team slipped past St. Scholastica 1-0, at Mars Lakeview Arena on Tuesday.
The win for UWS (6-5-1) is its fourth consecutive against the Saints – the longest-ever streak versus CSS – upping the overall lead in the all-time series to 13-7-1.
Jorde was credited with her second goal of the season and 10th of her career just as a St. Scholastica power play was expiring. A pass from behind the Saints' goal line glanced off of a forechecking Jorde and then off of CSS goaltender Lori Huseby and in for the lead.
The goal was the Yellowjackets' first short-handed marker of the season.
UWS senior goalie
McKenzie Whalen (East Grand Forks, Minn./East Grand Forks) made the goal stand up with 24 saves on the night for her second shutout of the season and the fourth of her career. Whalen was at her best in the first period, turning aside 10 CSS shots.
The game was moved from Jan. 25 at Wessman Arena after the original opponents for both teams – Hamline for the 'Jackets and UW-River Falls for the Saints – were unable to play. UWS competed for the first time in a span of 31 days.
Huseby came up with 43 saves, falling to 4-4-1 on the season. The win for Whalen moved her to 3-4-1 on the year. St. Scholastica dropped to 6-5-1 overall on the season.
Both teams went 0-for-3 on the power play.
Seniors
Megan Dulong (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids Senior),
Jenna Curtis (Webster, Wis./Webster) and
C.C. Hayes (Fort Frances, Ontario/Fort Frances) fired six shots on goal apiece to lead the Superior offense.
UWS is next scheduled to host fourth-ranked UW-Eau Claire Thursday at Wessman Arena. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.
