Story Links

SUPERIOR, Wis. – Junior Mady Sanders (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) posted a double-double of 11 points and career-high 18 rebounds to lead the UW-Superior women's basketball team to a 81-72 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference victory over Crown at Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium on Friday.

The Yellowjackets erased a 13-point second-quarter deficit and trailed 48-45 at halftime before limiting the Storm to 30 percent shooting in the third quarter and 18.8 in the fourth for the win. Crown shot the lights out in the first half, going 53 percent from the floor (17-for-32) and 63 percent (7-of-11) from 3-point range.

UWS (3-9, 2-1 UMAC) placed four starters in double figures to offset a 32-point effort from the Storm's McKenzie Latzke. Freshman Makenna Guden (Edgar, Wis./Edgar) paced Superior with 16 points while classmate Allison Luoma (Iron River, Wis./Northwestern) just missed a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds. Senior Brianna O'Donnell (Richfield, Minn./Richfield) added 13 points, four boards, two blocks and a steal.

Sanders rounded out the 'Jackets first double-double of the season with three assists, two blocks and a steal. She obliterated her previous best rebound total by eight boards, collecting 10 defensive to go with eight on the offensive glass.

Destiny Ray hit a trey with 7:32 in the first half to give Crown (4-5, 0-3) its largest lead of the night at 37-24. From there, UWS used a 9-0 run – capped by an Allie Zimmer (Waconia, Minn./Waconia) triple – to cut into the advantage. The 'Jackets got as close as three points on three occasions prior to the break.

Sanders tied the game, 51-51, less than three minutes into the second half when she rebounded an Elise Besonen (Ewen, Mich./Ewen-Trout Creek) miss and put it back up and in. The next time down, Guden gave Superior the lead with a 3-pointer, making it 54-51 with 6:47 to play in the third quarter.

Luoma then pushed the lead to 67-61 on a jumper, assisted by Kaelyn Christian (St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville Senior), with a minute to play in the period and scored six of the Superior's next seven points to make it a 72-63 game with 8:37 in regulation.

A Guden jumper in the paint with five minutes on the clock moved the lead to 79-67 while Luoma hit a free throw for UWS' largest edge of 13 two minutes later.

Superior shot 44.6 percent and outrebounded the smaller Storm team by a 48-33 margin.

UWS is back in action Saturday when Minnesota Morris comes to town at 3 p.m. The Cougars picked up a 58-42 victory at Northland on Friday and sit at 2-1 in conference action.
