Story Links

SUPERIOR, Wis. -- The UW-Superior men's soccer team got goals from six different sources, scoring three times in each half, in a 6-0 shutout of Minnesota Morris on Friday at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.

With the win, UWS moves one step closer to claiming the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference regular-season title. If Superior defeats Crown Saturday in the finale for both teams, the 'Jackets will earn the top seed in the upcoming league tournament, regardless of the result of the match between Bethany Lutheran and North Central.

On Friday, UWS (13-3-2, 10-1-2 UMAC) scored twice in the first nine minutes and didn't look back. Senior Blake Perry (Anoka, Minn./Anoka) scored his 13th of the season from sophomore Josh Bellamy (High Wycombe, England/FAB Football Academy) 3:05 into the contest, and sophomore Mackie Ringrose (Ewhurst, England/St Peter's Catholic School) scored 5:47 later from juniors Karsten Kletti (Vadnais Heights, Minn./White Bear Lake Area) and Phillip Eriksen (Skjetten, Norway/Lorenskog). On the play that made it 2-0, Kletti's cross found Ringrose inside the six-yard box. His shot beat Minnesota Morris goalkeeper Lucas Harmon low for his fifth goal of the season.

The Yellowjackets pushed the lead to 3-0 in the 41st minute when a cross from freshman Jake Kidd (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) on the near side found the head of sophomore Gavin Watkinson (Lakeville, Minn./Farmington Area) for the goal.

Eriksen got into the act in he 63rd minute, depositing a feed from Aaron Shartin-Folkert (Hudson, Wis./Somerset) past Harmon on the right, prior to a Kidd scoring his seventh from Shartin-Folkert in the 78th minute for a 5-0 lead. On that play, Shartin-Folkert, slid a low cross with his right foot on the near side to Kidd for the goal.

Freshman Ryan Tomsche (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet Senior) added his third of the season in the 83rd minute for the final margin from Kidd and Shartin-Folkert.

Goalkeepers Alex Paredes (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) and Patrick Sessions (Brighton, England/Brighton, Hove & Sussex Sixth Form College) combined for the Yellowjackets' third consecutive and ninth clean sheet of the season. Sessions stopped the Cougars' only shot on goal in the 81st minute while Paredes drew the start, playing the first 66 minutes to improve to 12-2-2 overall. Harmon, who was relieved by Nick Isensee after 77 minutes, took the loss, falling to 3-7-5. Harmon made five saves and allowed five goals.

Minnesota Morris dropped to 3-10-5 overall and 3-5-5 in the UMAC with the loss.

The Yellowjackets kickoff with Crown is set for 4:30 p.m., on Saturday.
