Beeman, Drougas Power Yellowjackets to Season-Opening Shutout at Lawrence

APPLETON, Wis. -- Junior Rose Beeman (Minneapolis, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's School) made 17 saves for her second career shutout and sophomore Lucy Drougas (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) scored her first two collegiate goals as the UW-Superior women's hockey team won its season opener, 5-0, over Lawrence at Appleton Family Ice Center on Friday.

Beeman posted 11 saves in the first period when the game was scoreless, allowing the UWS offense time to get into gear.

UWS was finally able to break through when junior defender Jada LeBlanc (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Westgate Collegiate and Vocational Institute) gave her team the lead at 9:27 of the second period with an assist from sophomore Emma Booth (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd).

Drougas, a transfer from Saint Michael's in Colchester, Vt., and Superior native, doubled the lead at 15:07 of the period from freshman Veda Roeske (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area).

Freshman Ashton Parnell (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) opened a three-goal third period with a goal at the 6:56 mark from junior Jenna Hoops (Woodbury, Minn./Visitation School), another Saint Michael's transfer. Drougas hooked up with Hoops and freshman Cailey Davidson (St. Cloud, Minn./Apollo) at 10:54, and junior Andrea Stelling (Sioux Falls, S.D./Eaton Rapids (Mich.)) potted an unassisted goal at 18:51 for the final margin.

The Yellowjackets, who outshot LU, 49-17, improved to 3-0-0 against Lawrence all-time, having outscored the Vikings, 23-0.

Lawrence goaltender Sydney Seeley absorbed the loss, making 44 saves.

Sophomore Brynn MacLean (Wilcox, Saskatchewan/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame) paced UWS with six shots on goal while Drougas, Hoops and junior Kailey Swerhun (Thunder Bay, Ontario/St. Ignatius) had five each.

The teams close their weekend series Saturday with a 3 p.m., puck drop in Appleton.
