Hoops’ Overtime Winner Lifts Yellowjackets to Sweep of Lawrence

APPLETON, Wis. -- Junior Jenna Hoops (Woodbury, Minn./Visitation School) scored 46 seconds into overtime to lift the UW-Superior women's hockey team to a 3-2 victory over Lawrence at the Appleton Family Ice Center on Saturday.

Hoops' second goal of the day, scored unassisted at even strength, rescued UWS after the Yellowjackets carried a 2-0 lead into the third period, before seeing it vanish.

Sofia Alvarez scored on the power play from Molly Jastrabat 6:50 of the third to get Lawrence on the board at 2-1 and Delaney Kingsland tied it with 6:53 remaining with assists from Alvarez and Lauren Askenazy.

UWS (2-0-0) posted a goal in each of the first two periods to build the lead. Hoops teamed up with her fellow Saint Michael's transfers -- Lucy Drougas (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) and Evelyn Andrade (Boise, Idaho./California) -- to open the scoring with a power-play goal at 9:26 of the first period.

Junior Avery Schwark (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) doubled the lead at 3:53 of the second from sophomores Emma Booth (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd) and Brynn MacLean (Wilcox, Saskatchewan/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame).

Sophomore Molly Black (Devils Lake, N.D./Devils Lake) earned the start in the UWS net and made 22 saves for her third career victory.

Charlie Prior stopped 32 shots for the Vikings (0-2-0), taking the loss.

Hoops fired seven shots to lead the 'Jackets' offense and Booth had five.

Superior went 1-for-4 on the power play while Lawrence was 1-for-5.

UWS is back in action Friday at 3:50 p.m., in its home opener against Hamline at Wessman Arena.
