Story Links

SUPERIOR, Wis. -- Sophomore Mya Holmquist (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo) scored two first-half goals, including the game winner, to help the UW-Superior women's soccer team to a 3-1 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference victory at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex on Friday.

Holmquist notched her team-leading 13th and 14th goals of the season -- good for second in the UMAC -- in the 27th and 39th minutes, respectively. Freshman Kamryn Hill (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) opened the scoring with her 12th of the season just 4:22 into play. Sophomore goalkeeper Jenna Lang (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) made four saves for the victory in net, improving to 10-2-2 on the season.

The Yellowjackets, 12-3-2 overall and 12-3-1 in the league, are unbeaten in their last 13 matches (11-0-2) with 47 goals scored in that span.

Hill made it 1-0 early when she got around a defender and released a shot that beat Bernadette Cienik to the left from the middle of the penalty area. Sophomore Ava Giswold (Duluth, Minn./Proctor) started the play and earned an assist on the goal.

Junior Allison Alessi (Shakopee, Minn./Prior Lake) fed Holmquist for a header at the 26:44 mark to make it 2-0 before she added another into the far-post side netting at 38:21. Sophomore Emma Fornengo (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) picked up the assist on that tally which made it 3-0.

Minnesota Morris (3-12-3, 3-3-7-3) got on the scoreboard through Kim Peters at 76:23 with Monica Calderon on the assist, but got no closer as Lang turned aside a Matteya Borah shot later in he 77th.

UWS outshot the Cougars, 28-3 overall and 9-4 in shots on goal; Superior also led, 6-4, in corner kicks.

The Yelowjackets close the regular season Saturday at 7 p.m., with a Senior Night contest against Crown.
