Yellowjackets Finish Unbeaten UMAC Regular Season with 3-2 win over Crown

Story Links

SUPERIOR, Wis. -- For the second consecutive season, the UW-Superior women's soccer team completed an unbeaten Upper Midwest Athletic Conference regular season slate, finishing with a 3-2 victory over Crown at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex on Saturday.

Freshman Beth Schneider's (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West) second career goal in the 76th minute proved to be the game winner as the pesky Polars challenged UWS all night and were down just 2-1 at halftime.

Schneider, though, directed a bouncing ball on a scramble inside the six-yard box past Crown goalkeeper Riley Breitlow with 75:38 on the clock. Freshman Brynne Crystal (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) and junior Lindrey Schendel (Firestone, Colo./Skyline) assisted on the goal to make it 3-1.

Crown responded with a goal 10 minutes later from Rylee Fischer to make it 3-2, but the Yellowjackets held on to finish the conference season with a 13-0-1 record.

UWS (12-3-4 overall) scored twice in a span of 4:01 early to build a 2-0 lead on goals from sophomore Mya Holmquist (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo) and junior Niya Wilson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) in the eighth and 12th minutes, respectively. Wilson assisted on Holmquist's 13th of the year and Holmquist and Ava Giswold (Duluth, Minn./Proctor) assisted on Wilson's ninth.

Emma Domka cut the lead in half with a goal into the lower left of the net past freshman goalie Quinn Clark (Duluth Minn./Duluth East) in the 28th minute to send Crown (6-8-3, 4-6-3 UMAC) into the locker room down just one.

Clark made two saves, improving to 3-1-2 on the season while Breitlow stopped four, falling to 1-5-2 in the loss.

The same teams meet again Wednesday in Superior in the UMAC semifinals. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
