SUPERIOR, Wis. -- Junior goaltender
Rose Beeman (Minneapolis, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's School) stopped a career-high 49 saves and the UW-Superior women's hockey team outgunned Hamline in a five-goal third period, hanging on for a 5-3 victory, to open its 2022-23 home slate at Wessman Arena on Friday.
Beeman made 16 saves in the first period and 21 more in the second, giving UWS time to find offense after the Pipers scored first.
UWS (3-0-0), which snapped a six-game unbeaten streak against Hamline with the win, responded with four unanswered goals, including the first two of the third period just 1:22 apart. C.C. Hayes (Fort Frances, Ontario/Fort Frances) put the game away with 58 seconds to play with her second goal of the day into an empty net.

Avery Schwark (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) knotted the game at 1-1 at 18:02 of the first as sophomore
Maddie Rewertz (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) worked the puck back to the point to Schwark, whose shot beat Hamline goalie Kendra Nordick to the stick side. Freshman
Cailey Davidson (St. Cloud, Minn./Apollo) also assisted on the goal that sent the teams into intermission even.
Junior
Jenna Hoops (Woodbury, Minn./Visitation School) won an offensive-zone draw and put the puck on net and past Nordick for a 2-1 Superior lead at 16:23 of the second. Hayes added an unassisted marker at 4:18 of the third followed by a goal by freshman
Ashton Parnell (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) from Schwark at 5:40, making it 4-1.
Olund and Molly Myers scored less than three minutes apart at 14:15 and 17:11, respectively, but the 'Jackets held on for victory.
Beeman improved to 2-0-0 on the year with the win, while Nordick absorbed the loss, making 12 saves on 16 shots. She lasted 45:40 prior to giving way for Airika Penney.
Hamline (1-2-0) had the only three power plays in game, but Beeman kept the Pipers off the board on those chances, turning aside eight shots.
The Yellowjackets, who have started undefeated in their first three games for a second consecutive season, are back in action next Saturday, Nov. 12, hosing UW-Eau Claire. The WIAC opener between the two is scheduled for a 7 p.m., puck drop.
