SUPERIOR, Wis. -- Senior forward
Blake Perry (Anoka, Minn./Anoka) broke a second-half deadlock with a 66th-minute rocket from outside the penalty area to lift the UW-Superior men's soccer team to a 2-1 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference victory over Northwestern at NBC Spartan Sports Complex on Wednesday.
Perry, who came into play tied for 10th in NCAA Division III in goals, wired his 11th of the season to the top right of the net off of an assist from junior
Nicolai Stokker (Klokkarstua, Norway/St. Hallvard) to give the Yellowjackets (7-2-1, 5-0-1 UMAC) their 14th consecutive victory over the Eagles.
UWS has now won five consecutive matches -- all in league play -- and sits atop the standings with 16 points, three clear of both Bethany Lutheran and Northland.
Superior scored first in the 20th minute as sophomore
Mackie Ringrose (Ewhurst, England/St Peter's Catholic School) finished off a through ball from freshman
Freddy Watson (Wendover, England/Berkshire College of Agriculture) with the outside of his foot into the side netting on the right for his second goal of the season.
Northwestern (4-7-0, 3-3-0) equalized just out of halftime when Tim DeLoye headed Joey McMillan's corner kick past goalkeeper
Alex Paredes (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) in the 47tth minute.
UWS asserted itself after the go-ahead goal, putting pressure on the Eagles, including forcing goalie Andrew Skoglund into another save on a
Phillip Eriksen (Skjetten, Norway/Lorenskog) attempt directly following the Perry marker. Eriksen had another look in the 74th minute with Perry and sophomore
Josh Bellamy's (High Wycombe, England/FAB Football Academy) shots in the 86th and 90th minutes, respectively, also off target.
The 'Jackets held the ball for over half of the match, and outshot Northwestern, 19-8, overall and 7-3 in shots on target. Paredes made two saves, improving 7-1-1 on the year, while Skoglund (five saves) fell to 4-5-0.
UWS is back at it Saturday against North Central in a home 7:30 p.m., kickoff.
