SUPERIOR, Wis. -- Freshman forward
Kamryn Hill (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) scored two goals 10 minutes apart in the first half and sophomore goalkeeper
Jenna Lang (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) made five saves as the UW-Superior women's soccer team shut out Northwestern, 2-0, in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference action at NBC Spartan Sports Complex on Wednesday.
With the win, the Yellowjackets take a stranglehold on the top spot in the league standings at 6-0-0 with 18 points, six points clear of the field, while moving to 3-0-1 in the last four matches against the third-place Eagles (3-7-2, 3-1-2 UMAC). UWS (6-3-2 overall) has won five consecutive matches.
Hill scored in the 11th and 21st minutes to give Superior a two-goal cushion and Lang made it stand with her second consecutive clean sheet and fourth of the season.
The Yellowjackets put together a nifty passing play for the lead with 10:28 on the clock when junior
Lindrey Schendel (Firestone, Colo./Skyline) found sophomore
Mya Holmquist (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo) streaking down the near side of the field in space. Holmquist served the ball into the penalty area to a wide-open Hill, who beat Northwestern goalkeeper Reagan Flaschberger (four saves).
UWS doubled the lead as Hill flicked a bouncing ball from well outside the box that skipped off the turf and beat Flaschberger to the far post at the 20:01 mark. The unassisted goal was Hill's team-leading seventh of the season.
All of Lang's saves came after UWS built its advantage with three coming after halftime on bids from Mya Chan, Briella Babcock and Megan Moeller in the 56th, 59th and 82nd minutes, respectively.
Lang moved to 6-2-1 on the year, picking up the eighth clean sheet for her career. Flaschberger took the loss for UNW, dropping to 3-7-2. Delaynee Bohatta played the final 13 minutes for the Eagles, making four saves.
UWS outshot Northwestern, 17-14, overall and 10-5 in shots on target. The 'Jackets also led in corner kicks, 5-3, on the day.
UWS returns to action Saturday, hosting North Central. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
