SUPERIOR, Wis. -- Junior
Rose Beeman (Minneapolis, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's School) made 36 saves but eighth-ranked UW-Eau Claire scored a goal in each period to shut out the UW-Superior women's hockey team, 3-0, in the WIAC opener for both at Wessman Arena on Saturday.
Beeman stopped 13 shots in he first period and 15 more in the second in the Yellowjackets' first loss of the season. Hallie Sheridan scored her third of the season at 18:38 of the first period from Sydney Johnson and Samantha Sherling.
Eden Gruber doubled the lead at 15:02 of the second period, cutting left to right out of the corner, to beat Beeman on the backhand. Hattie Verstegen assisted on Gruber's second of the year.
Sophie Rauch scored her seventh from Emily Hart on the rush, charging across the blue line and firing it past Beeman on the stick side.
Stephanie Martin made 10 saves for the shutout as the Blugolds moved to 4-1-0 and 1-0-0 in the WIAC on the season with the win.
UW-Eau Claire finished 1-for-6 on the power play while the 'Jackets were scoreless in two opportunities with the extra skater.
UWS (3-1-0, 1-0-0) is back in action Tuesday against Gustavus Adolphus at Don Roberts Ice Rink. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.
